The camp director is

Before camp:

  • Writes an introductory piece for the newsletter by March 15 for opening of registration. If there is any special track planned for a week, it’s good to announce it then.
  • Contacts all adults including young adults concerning an assignment for them and gets their agreements for that assignment by the time the registration booklet is going to be printed. Good communication with people will result in a smoother start of camp and a good foundation to work with them.
  • Coordinates with the education director and lets him/her do the assignments for those who will be presenters or group leaders.
  • Responds to emails from other staff and from participants.
  • Has conference calls or phone calls with other staff members.
  • Makes the schedule with the help of a previous schedule.

During camp:

  • Arrives early for camp.
  • Coordinates the orientation and the meetings afterwards.
  • Is one step ahead of the schedule and makes sure the planning works out. Communicates with those who are in charge of the next activities.
  • Keeps the schedule on time. Coordinates with the cook about starting time of meals.
  • Makes announcements or arranges for others to make announcements.
  • Checks up on people doing their assignments: Makes sure people know how to do them, makes sure they get done, makes sure people are happy with them. Changes assignments, in case of any problems.
  • Whenever necessary fills in temporarily themselves with what needs to be done.
  • Has a daily/nightly meeting with the main staff and opens it up to any interested adults.
  • Listens to all problems and tries to solve them. Involves others, if help is needed.
  • If there is another program after that week, he/she helps towards an easy transition and communicates with the next camp director about it.

After camp:

  • Responds to any requests from participants/group leaders to write a letter about them having volunteered at camp.
  • Reads the reflections and surveys.
  • Writes a report for the newsletter.
  • Makes a report for the Council/Representatives which should include what worked well and what could be improved.
