Needed: 1 person to organize the crafts for the workshop and lead this activity

The crafts organizer's assignments include:

  • Plan crafts activities for the different groups ahead of camp. Email the registrar before camp for a breakdown of how many kids are in each group.
  • Buy needed materials (could be ordered online). Bring materials to camp on arrival day. There will most likely be a few extra attendees in some groups, so purchase a little extra.
  • During camp instruct the craft helpers and organize the craft activities with the groups.
  • Get a padlock and key from the registrar for locking the crafts cabin. Keep it locked when not in use. Return the padlock and key to the registrar the evening of the last full day.

All crafts sessions take place in the afternoon, right after lunch. The exact schedule may vary from week to week, but there usually are two crafts session: 1:30–2:30pm and 2:45–3:45pm. Some days there might be only one crafts session. Several different age groups might attend the same crafts session; the exact number depends on the overall number of groups in the workshop. Crafts are offered on the first, second, and third full day of camp, but on one of those days crafts is only offered to the Twinkles and Stars. (The crafts organizer has no crafts responsibility on that day.) There are usually no crafts sessions on the last full day of camp.

The Crafts Cabin is a building with electricity. There is a sink with running water. There are two dining-hall-sized tables for activities inside, a large porch, and a picnic table outside.

Crafts are offered for kids up to age 17 (Supernovas). Quasars (18 and up) usually don’t do crafts.

The groups that are scheduled to do crafts in the crafts cabin are:

  • Moons: age 8–9
  • Suns: age 10–11
  • Comets: age 12–13
  • Supernovas: age 14–17

Depending on the number and age of participants, some weeks combine two age group into one, so check with the camp director about your week's groups.

Twinkles (up to age 5) and Stars (6-7) don’t do crafts in the crafts cabin, but instead with their teachers in their own workshop location. The Twinkles and Stars teachers might rely on the crafts organizer to supply the materials; this is handled different in each workshop and should be clarified with the education director before camp.

The group leaders are required to stay with their groups during crafts. The crafts organizer should let the camp director know if the group leaders are not with their groups during crafts.

Crafts projects can include anything that is age-appropriate and stays within the budget. You can spend $2 on average per person who does crafts. ($1.00 for Stars, and Twinkles; $2.00 for Moons, Suns, Comets,; $3.00 for Supernovas and older)

The crafts organizer or an assistant should be familiar with the type of craft projects they are providing, so they can provide step-by-step instructions. In the past, crafts have included t-shirt tie-dying, candle making, sealing found objects in resin coating, wooden 3D puzzles, creating dreamcatchers, creating "God's eyes," mosaic, soap stone carving, drums, painting tiles, and much more.

Over the years, we have accumulated quite a bit of leftover crafts supplies that can be used for new projects. Please contact the registrar to get a list. However, since it’s impossible to know which materials will be used by other weeks, this list will be outdated and it’s important not to rely too much on existing supplies.
